The Humane Way To Catch And Release Creepy Crawlies

The Spider Vac Will Take Care of Most Bugs In Your Home
The Spider Vac Will Take Care of Most Bugs In Your Home

Yep, it's that time of year again when spiders begin creeping back in to the house. Now, this might not bother you too much if you're not an arachnophobe, but it seems all but the most hardened of designated spider removers have a limit to the size of spiders they are willing to handle. Enter, Spider-Vac. This neat little contraption is ideal for picking up those spiders you just aren't willing to, or are simply unable to pick up. Combining the 'technologies' of the vacuum cleaner and the humble cup and card you can now keep creepy crawlies at a distance when you remove them from your home or office without harming them.

Now, in the interests of research I have been testing one of these devices out over the past couple of weeks to size up exactly how well they work. The first thing you will notice when approaching your first bug to capture is their unwillingness to unstick themselves from their surface. This is particularly true for walls and ceilings, where they tend to get good grip. On those surfaces it takes a few seconds to get them to un-grip. It was, however, particularly satisfying when a rather large spider I found crawling up the wall the other day went in to the tube with very little fight, the cap was quickly put on the end and the spider was promptly released back in to the wilderness unharmed. It also comes in handy tight spots and corners where it's difficult to get to the spider, such as the shower or bath and while it is called spider-vac it can certainly deal with other bugs. In one instance I even managed to catch a (rather slow) fly!

I must admit, I was somewhat skeptical about whether I would want to use the Spider-Vac. I'm not particularly bothered by bugs - OK, maybe those annoying May bugs - but I have found the spider-vac useful. Its certainly recommended for those who can't bear to be in the presence of a spider without constantly monitoring its movement or for those who would prefer to sleep in a spider free environment, and, if you can't find any bugs to catch you can also use it as a handy torch!
