HDMI Comes To Mobile Phones
HDMI 1.4 Introduces The Tiny Micro HDMI Type D Connector For Small Devices
The introduction of the Mini HDMI Type C connector allowed portable digital devices such as HD camcorders and laptops to use the HDMI interface as the primary way to transfer data between devices. The small connector easily fits on to these devices and is directly compatible with the larger, standard Type A, HDMI connector and this is what has made it ever more popular with manufacturers. However, there is still a problem; the Mini HDMI (Type C) connector is too small for smaller mobile devices such as mobile phones and pocket cameras. HDMI 1.4 aims to fix all that with the Micro HDMI connector also known as Type D.
The new Micro HDMI connector will bring HD resolutions to devices that previously couldn't fit bulky HDMI connections on them. This means we can soon expect full HD 1080p mobile phones that we can easily play out on our HDTVs via a Micro HDMI to HDMI Type A cable. The new connector will - like Type A and Type C HDMI connectors - have 19 pins meaning the conversion between HDMI connections should be simple. The Micro HDMI Type D connector will be around 50% smaller than the current Mini HDMI Type C connector (or roughly the size of the Micro USB connector currently used on many small mobile devices) and will be capable of running full 1080p HD resolutions. It seems the HD revolution isn't over just yet!
